Former European Champions, Glasgow Celtic, is set to join a growing list of world-famous football clubs to play at ANZ Stadium.

The 42-time Scottish Champions will meet A-League powerhouse, the Central Coast Mariners, in a Football Federation Australia-ratified contest on Saturday 2 July.

ANZ Stadium Managing Director Daryl Kerry said: “ANZ Stadium shares a special bond with football fans in this country, having hosted arguably the biggest moment in Australian football history – the 2005 World Cup-qualifying victory against Uruguay.

“We’ve worked hard to make sure that relationship continues and hosting Glasgow Celtic – one of the most famous, not to mention most popular, football clubs in the world – is a huge coup.

“Celtic boast a huge international following, including a number of passionate Sydney-based supporter groups, and the Mariners will no doubt attract an equally fervent fan base.

“I think we can expect quite a spectacle and we’re certainly looking forward to it.”

The three-game tour, which will also hit Perth and Melbourne, will be the Scottish football giants’ third visit to Australia.

Most recently, Celtic went head to head with the Brisbane Roar in a hugely successful friendly match at Suncorp Stadium in 2009.

Tribal Sports Management Managing Director, Lou Sticca, said he was delighted to be bringing Celtic to Sydney.

“This tour is a victory for the average football supporter,” he said.

“We’ve worked hard to keep ticket prices down to ensure bumper crowds around the country.

“After seeing first-hand what impact the Celtic visit had on football fans in Brisbane in 2009 we are delighted to provide this opportunity for even more fans around the country to experience the fantastic atmosphere that Celtic fans are famous for all over the world.”

World-famous football clubs Manchester United, LA Galaxy and Everton are among the teams to have played at ANZ Stadium. A number of international teams, including Brazil, Spain and China, have also featured at the venue.

Football played an integral part in the Stadium’s 1999 grand opening with the Socceroos defeating the FIFA World All Stars, 3-2.

Celtic FC v Central Coast Mariners will kick off at 7.30pm.

Tickets are still available through Ticketek. There will be a supporters bay for each team and group discounts for bookings of 20 or more tickets will be available.
