Council calls for EOI
Parramatta City Council has called for expressions of interest for potential members to join its design excellence advisory panel to provide independent expert advice and expertise on urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, art and sustainability within Parramatta. High-powered forum
Parramatta City Council will host a day-long forum on the growth of Sydney, the expansion of Western Sydney and the role of Parramatta as the region's capital. A series of panel discussions will be moderated by the: NSW Property Council, Sydney Business Chamber, Tourism &Transport Forum, Infrastructure Partnerships Australia and the Committee for Sydney. The forum will be held at the Parkroyal, on Tuesday, March 8.

Councillor aims to be state MP
Councillor on Parramatta City Council, Pierre Esber, has been selected by the Labor Party national executive to contest the state Parramatta seat in the March election, following the retirement of Tanya Gadiel. An opponent of Cr Esber, owner of a plumbing business, will be UWS academic, Dr Geoffrey Lee, for the Liberals.

TAFE takes out top award
TAFE NSW – Western Sydney Institute has been named the 2010 Australian Large Training Provider of the Year, at the Australian Training Awards The accolade – one of the Australian Training Awards’ highest honours – comes on the back of the Institute being named NSW Large Training Provider of the Year for two years in a row. Asia Pacific glass packaging and manufacturing company, O-I, at Penrith, won the Australian Training Industry Award for Manufacturing.

Tim Hannan, a Senior Lecturer from the School of Psychology at the University of Western Sydney, has been elected as a general director on the Australian Psychological Society's board of directors. The society represents 19,000 members. Mr Hannan will serve a three-year term.

The NSW Government has approved a $182 million concept plan for a 50 hectare employment site at the former Hoxton Park Aerodrome The proposal includes a Big W warehouse with 89,000 square metres of gross floor area and a Dick Smith warehouse with 51,700 square metres of gross floor area. The proponent, Mirvac Group, will start building works immediately, and anticipates the Dick Smith building will be completed by January 2012, and the Big W warehouse by March 2012. Minister for Planning, Tony Kelly, said the project is expected to support 1,400 construction jobs, and a further 1,135 operational jobs once the concept plan has been realised.

The Parramatta-based Western Sydney Business Connection has established the Western Sydney Manufacturers Network (WSMN). The aim is to help regional manufacturers improve their business practices and outcomes through a range of activities and opportunities,” said WSMN facilatitor, John Pearson, former regional manager of the NSW Business Chamber in Western Sydney. WSMN also aims to be an effective voice for manufacturers in Western Sydney, to promote the region as a manufactruring centre and preferred place for investment and the focus for other regional economic development outcomes.

AUSTRALIA should not be strongly affected by Europe’s debt issues if household debt does not dramatically increase, Reserve Bank governor Glenn Stevens said on Wednesday 9th June 2010.

New head of health service

Heather Gray, former chief executive of Greater Southern Area Health Service, based in the ACT, has been appointed head of the Sydney West Area Health Service. Ms Gray, who has held senior positions in South Australia and regional NSW, replaces Professor Steven Boyages who has resigned.

Property sold for $18.1 million

Over Fifty Group’s property division, Century Funds Management, has sold a 12,145-square-metre 
warehouse distribution facility, at Loyalty Road, North Rocks, to a private investor for $18.1 million. The property is leased to Officeworks, until August 2018, providing a net income of $1.5 million annually.

Uni-sponsored team wins in USA
The Macquarie University-sponsored Thunder Down Under robotics team has returned to Australia after winning three awards and the respect of teams from around the world, at the recent FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Championships held in Atlanta, Georgia. The team, comprising high school students and home schoolers from across Sydney, will be helping out with robotics programs at the Powerhouse Museum and as part of Engineers Australia's Australian Engineering Week event, in August.

Transformation of Rydalmere
Parramatta City Council proposes to allocate $90,000 to investigate options to transform the Rydalmere precinct into a technology and knowledge centre. Council regards Rydalmere as a major component of the Parramatta Primary Centre, the economic hub of the city. The proposal is contingent on council obtaining approval from the Department of Local Government to continue a special rate for economic development.

$400m Civic Place stage one
Developer, Grocon, has presented to a Parramatta City Council workshop a $400 million stage one proposal for the $1.6 billion Civic Place redevelopment. The presentation included council facilities as well as commercial and retail development. It is understood that redevelopment would first occur on the site facing Smith Street, between Sydney Water’s head office and Macquarie Street. 

Hospital company collapses
Owen Ferguson Health, the company that ran Canada Bay Private Hospital, has collapsed less than a week after the state government expressed confidence in working with it on a $51 million hospital at Homebush Bay. ANZ Bank has appointed the receivers Ferrier Hodgson to take over three of the group's hospitals, in Lismore, Mackay and Melbourne. A spokesman for the Sydney Olympic Park Authority said the state government would now ''monitor the situation'' and assess its legal options.

Largest outside Sydney CBD
Parramatta has NSW’s largest employment concentration outside of the Sydney CBD. Close to 90,000 people work in the area, with over two thirds of jobs located in the major business hubs; Parramatta CBD, Westmead and the industrial estates of Camellia, Rydalmere and Rosehill, according to Parramatta City Council.

Ranked for the first time
The Macquarie Graduate School of Management (MGSM) has been ranked for the first time in the Financial Times Global MBA rankings. MGSM was ranked 99th on the list of top global MBA schools, while its accountancy and finance programs were rated number five and number eight respectively in the top schools by subject rankings. To be ranked among the top 100 MBA programs in the world is a significant achievement for MGSM, the university said

A communications officer is being sought for council’s communication and marketing team, at a range of $59,190 to $67, 061 plus super

Leasing ‘heating up’
Leasing in Macquarie Park/North Ryde is heating up with 46,000 square metres of new space completed in the first half of 2009, more than any other market in Sydney, according to CB Richard Ellis. “The new Epping to Chatswood rail link … is drawing tenant interest from traditional North Shore markets, as evidenced by CSR’s recent relocation from Chatswood,” said CBRE’s Luke Nixon. The 340-hectare Macquarie Park/North Ryde has an estimated 800,000 square metres of commercial space.
